50% Lazy Bee model airplane plan

50% Lazy Bee

DMorris Design's 50% Lazy Bee

I wanted something to fly in my back yard. It had to be small, light weight, quick to build, and durable. I found a set of Lazy Bee plans by Clancy Aviation and printed them out at half-size. It flew pretty well, so I drew up the plans for others to build their own. I retained Andy Clancy's classic shape and adapted it for foam construction using the pink fan-fold Foamular foam insulation board reinforced with carbon fiber and 1/64" plywood. It is 3 channels and uses the smallest components I could find. All of the parts I used came from a Hitec Zipper - 3g servos, 10amp ESC and a teeny motor. All-up weight, ready-to-fly, is 5.1 ounces, and could be a gram or so lighter if I hadn't used hot-melt glue.

What are you ordering:

You are ordering a print from the main PDF file in this listing, it´s exactly like taking this file in a thumb drive to a local print shop and ask them to make a print.

About the plan source:

You should verify if the source file has the quality for the type of construction you intend to do, we will print the file without any kind of enhancement or scaling. To know if the file is good please download it and open it on a pdf viewer like Adobe pdf viewer and set the view level or zoom level to 100% or 1:1 or full scale or actual size, depending on which version or pdf viewer you are using. Also, using the measuring tool make sure all the parts fit together and have the correct size.
In doubt please ask us for an opinion.

Plans Scaling:

We can scale this plan for you. But please keep in mind that if this plan is not vector, if you enlarge it too much the quality will be degraded.

You will receive:

  • Laser Printed plan on good quality Bond paper or/and Tracing Paper and/or Polyester sheet of the PDF file from this listing, depending on what you have purchased.
  • Rolled sheets, up to 5 in the same cardboard tube.
  • Envelope, up to 5 sheets per envelope.
  • Articles and Instructions if they are available and if you order them.
  • Air Mail, Priority, Priority Insured or Normal mail, according to your choice.

About our printers:

We use professional quality laser OCÉ and Canon printers/copiers, these printers use toner, not ink so the printings will be durable and waterproof.

About the different media types:

Bond Paper: White Bond paper, 80 grams per square meter.
Bond Tracing paper: Bond Tracing paper, 90 grams per square meter.
Polyester film: High quality polyester sheet incredibly durable, will resist cuts and glue and can be washed (I use it as sail material on my RC sailboats).

We charge by print length (914mm or 91,4cm or 36in. by the length of the print)
This means that a plan 120cm by 150cm will be charged two times 150cm because it will be printed in two tiles, a plan 91cm by 150cm will be charged one time its length or 150cm and a plan 91cm by 40cm will be charged 40cm.
The system will try to fit a plan in the 91,4cm of the printer width in order to reduce the costs or print length to the maximum. This is the same charging method used in any printshop.

We will use paper or waxed paper padded envelopes for folded plans and hard cardboard tubes with plastic ends for rolled plans, depending on your choice.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing.
sizing lhager on 19/09/2016 12:50
Hi Guys,
I'm new to working from raw plans so my question is, there are no dimensions on the plans that I have downloaded, how do I know the sizes of the individual pieces?
Printing plans to scale DMorrisPE on 19/09/2016 13:05
First, all of my plans have a scale bar nearer the bottom of the plans. When each bar segment measures properly, you have printed the plans at the right size. Then you simply trace the patterns onto the foam.

2nd, and more importantly, always use the free program "Adobe Reader DC" available at https://get.adobe.com/reader/ to print your PDF plans. It has a "Poster" option that will print the plans on a bunch of letter-size pages that you trim and tape together. When using Adobe Reader DC, you can select the scale that you need, usually 100%..
Doesn't need dihedral LenBFP on 20/09/2016 20:32
I built one from blue foam and made the wing without the dihedral breaks and it flies nice. I guess the weight of the fuselage under the wing acts like a pendulum. The battery is at the very bottom of the fuselage. I can get to the battery from the bottom without taking off the wing which makes it more convenient.
Dihedral DMorrisPE on 20/09/2016 21:13
Dihedral just provides an extra stabilizing force to minimize need for ailerons. I built mine with dihedral to mimic the original design. I also put my access hatch on the bottom of the plane (as shown in the photos, for the same reason.

The original Lazy Bee had a 40" wingspan and was made of balsa. AeroFred has the original plans available for download. OR.... you can print the 50% Lazy Bee plans out using Adobe Reader DC in poster mode with the Scale set to 200% scale (100% x 2) to make it twice as large, BUT you are on your own to figure out how to make it strong enough to support itself and handle the greater amount of power.

My suggestions to use strengthened foam construction are:
1. Incorporate 3/16" diameter carbon fiber tube into the wing at the Balance Point and running between the dihedral joints. The tips don't need the extra strength.
2. Embed a 1.2mm carbon fiber rod into the rudder where the rudder hinge line is located. Then attach a small diameter metal tube to the end of the fuselage for the carbon fiber rod of the rudder. This becomes a much stronger hinge that will stop the rudder from flopping around.
3. The mailing label material still has to be placed on the top surface of the wing to prevent the foam from cracking when the wing curve is made.
4. You will need to add an extra wing rib (R1) between the fuselage and the dihedral break. That would be six (6) ribs instead of four (4) .
1200kv Flyingryan on 16/03/2019 22:15
11200kv motor should do the trick
